In particular, the diagnosis of constrictive pericarditis can be challenging, and differentiation from restrictive cardiomyopathy is important for management. Currently, diagnostic evaluations focus on evaluation of pericardial thickness, septal motion, systolic and diastolic myocardial function, invasive pressure measurement, and endomyocardial biopsy in conjunction with clinical assessment for diagnosis of constrictive pericarditis (1).

Comprehensive characterization of constrictive pericarditis using multiparametric CMR.

Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) is uniquely placed to characterize constrictive pericarditis. CMR comprehensively defines pericardial and myocardial anatomy as well as their structural and functional relationship. Indeed, through evaluation of regional myocardial deformation, ventricular interaction and venous return, CMR can accurately assess the physiological consequences of pericardial cons...

Tuberculous Constrictive Pericarditis

INTRODUCTION Constrictive pericarditis is characterized by constriction of the heart secondary to pericardial inflammation. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging is useful imaging modality for addressing the challenges of confirming this diagnosis. It can be used to exclude other causes of right heart failure, such as pulmonary hypertension or myocardial infarction, determine whether ...

Can CMR be the new ‘gold standard’ for constrictive pericarditis?

Historically, the cardiac catheterization has been the ‘gold standard’for the evaluation and confirmation of constrictive pericarditis. Noninvasive CMR should have a potential role to be equivalent or even superior given its abiltiy to detect both the anatomic and physiologic impact of an abnormal pericardium. Via RF tissue-tagging, we show that CMR could be a contender for a new non-invasive s...

CMR real-time, free-breathing, phase contrast flow quantification: a novel approach to assess ventricular coupling in constrictive pericarditis

Background/objective Constrictive pericarditis (CP) is an important cause of heart failure; however, with accurate diagnosis and directed treatment it is potentially curable. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) has played a diagnostic role, primarily by allowing assessment of pericardial morphology but with limited depiction of physiological changes. We sought to examine the feasibility of...

Late onset radiation-induced constrictive pericarditis and cardiomyopathy after radiotherapy

INTRODUCTION Radiation-induced heart disease (RIHD) is a serious side effect of cancer treatment, including coronary artery disease, valvular cardiac dysfunction, cardiomyopathy, aortopathy, and chronic constrictive pericarditis. Herein, this case we present was diagnosed as radiation-induced constrictive pericarditis and cardiomyopathy by means of cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) and transthor...
